Rules by Cynthia Lord

As soon as I opened the cover to this book I was hooked. I have worked with many students with Autism and it has become a passion of mine. I love creating that relationship with each student and learning how they think. Rules by Cynthia Lord, is story written in the prospective of a little girl, Catherine, who has a younger brother with Autism. The book starts out with a page of “rules” Catherine has created for her brother David. A couple of them include: If someone says “hi,” you say “hi” back, Say “thank-you” when someone gives you a present (even if you don’t like it), and no toys in the fish tank. As the story goes on Catherine helps her brother with learning from everyday event’s that turn into new rules. I highly recommend you checking this book out from your local library…you won’t regret it.

  1. So glad you enjoyed this book! Definitely one of my favorites. In fact, I’m teaching it in Adolescent Lit next week! Will send that class to check out your blog about it!
